Celebration of Lawari Tunnels Completion in Islamabad/Rawalpindi

The Chitralis all over the world are excited with news that the first phase of the construction of Lawari Tunnel would be completed by mid January 2009 when both the ends of the tunnel would embrace each other. The completion of Lawari Tunnel will not provide the inhabitants of Chitral with long awaited all-weather route who are seized in a narrow mountainous valley to face harsh weather conditions with resource scarcity and continuous natural calamities, but it has been a matter of life and death for more than four hundred thousand people. For decades Chitralis, a faithful citizen of the country, kept the dream of Lawari Tunnel alive and continued to struggle for their right to have a weather free route. It is Dreams Come True situation for Chitralis with a fair anticipation that the completion of the tunnel would open new avenues of economic opportunities and create numerous options for livelihoods improvement.

In the wake of this development, the Chitralis living in Rawalpindi/Islamabad and surroundings of the twin cities would like to celebrate the completion of first phase of the Lawari Tunnel once the two ends meet expectedly in mid January 2009. A series of meetings were held with Chitralis who could be contacted during the last few weeks to thrash-out a plan on how to materialize the idea. In the last meeting held on December 21, 2008, it was agreed that the programme should be owned by all Chiralis without any discrimination from Arandu to Broghil irrespective of their sect, caste, ethnicity and association with various political parties and Organizations. An event management committee comprising the senior Chitralis residing in Rawalpindi Islamabad will coordinate the activities. All Chitalis living the Rawalpindi/Islamabad will be contacted by the committee to receive their inputs to better deign the event.

The primary objective of this event is to extend gratitude to the individuals and institutions/organizations who contributed to the success of this great project at certain level from raising awareness to decision making process. Another objective of the programme is to demonstrate the desire of Chitralis to expedite the work in the next phase of the project. The presence of concerned senior government officials in the event will provide the Chitralis with the opportunity to convey their request for extending the project by linking Chitral with Central Asia to develop this district as a new gateway for international trade.

Through this letter the committee would like to invite all Chitralis to participate in the event and give their valuable inputs so that the objective of the programme can be achieved effectively. The time, agenda and venue of the next meeting will be communicated through individual contacts as well as through another letter with the courtesy of online dailies shortly.

We hope that all Chitralis will extend their full cooperation in this regard and make the event a success. We will highly appreciate the financial support from the well-off Chitralis for this programme and for contribution please contact the following committee members.
