Impact of Global warming on glaciers in Chitral
Due to climate change, glacier bursts, 80 K.M north of Chitral, hit
the Sonoghur village and devasted houses and crops. Before this
glacier burst, 150 families had already left their homes after
anticipating the glacier lake outburst flood. Sonoghur village was
also inundated in June last year when the same glacier burst out
and washed away 140 homes. The Brep village of Yarkhoon valley was
also flooded last year, when glacier burst out in the upper
mountain. Thus, Chitral has been the worst victim of global
warming.
The calamity hit area of Sonoghur village, Chitral needs immediate
relief goods and the officials should make correct assessment of
the actual loss.
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) should select the
Sonoghur glacier for research purpose on glacial change caused by
global warming due to frequent burst of it. Govt of Pakistan should
also take the matter seriously and ask the local administration to
take measures for the rehabilitation of the displaced people and
compensate the losses.
A team of our Scientists should visit the area to conduct a
scientific survey of the movement of glaciers in the region due to
climate change and formulate any future disaster. Disaster
management plan at district level is also need of the hour and
should be implemented with immediate effect.
National Disaster Management Authority should come forward and
prepare a detailed report on it for disaster management strategy.
As global warming is a burning issue of the world, our own Govt
should not turn deaf ears to it.
