Environment Day Invites us to Reflect on our Activities

Dear Editor

Through your esteemed online paper I would try to define environment before discussing environment day. Environment can be interpreted in different ways, but in the simplest word it means the surroundings in which living and non-living things exist. Environment can be divided into two components, the natural (Bio physical) environment and the human (socio-cultural) environment. The natural environment consists of

Living (Biotic) things, such as human, animals and plants.
Non-living (A biotic) things, such as air, water, minerals, temperature, sunlight and son on.
The human made environment includes beliefs and values,, economic activities, political systems, technology and etc.

Why the World Community Celebrates Environment Day?

The World Environment Day is celebrated all over the world every year on June 5. On this day, in 1972, the Stockholm conference on human environment was held in Sweden. There was a large gathering of people from all over the world and they expressed their concerns for the increasing environmental problems due to human activities. For example, de-forestation, producing carbon dioxide gas, water pollution, killing of wild animals, birds, explosion of human population, Industrial revolution and so on. We need to carefully observe the impact of human activities on the natural system, which creates environmental problems that threaten the life on the Earth. Therefore, we need to explore the causes and impacts of environmental problems. We are, basically the part of the natural environment. But, unlike other animals and plants, we have been exploiting the natural resources increasingly. The cultural and technological development activities have changed our relationship with nature. The results are lack of resources, disruption of natural systems and other sever environmental issues. So, we extremely need to have environmental knowledge, skills and attitudes to take initiatives to address those issues in time. Take action today tomorrow will be too late.
