Laboureres of Golen hydro power project on strike for non payment of salaries

By Zahiruddin

CHITRAL: The strike of labourers of Golen Gol hydro power project entered the third day here on Thursday who are protesting on non payment of salaries for the last four months starting from the month of July.

A representative of the labourers union working on the site, Faizur Rahman, talking to the local media on phone from the site that all the twelve hundred labourers working in three shifts in the hydro power project had no option but to stop the work as the Korean construction company, Sambu had failed to pay them salaries for the last three months.

He said that the company was blatantly violating the rules of labouers and the terms of agreement made with the labourers made with them at the time of engaging them and one of the terms was the payment of salary by the 10th of each month.

He said that as per rules binding upon the foreign construction companies, a construction company of such mega project, should have a deposit of salaries of six months and it is also the failure of WAPDA, the executing agency, to get it implemented.

Mr. Rahman alleged that the Korean managers of the company, transfer the funds to Korea when WAPDA pays them the bills of the work done as a result of which the labourers are not paid timely.

He said that the Eidul Azha was coming nearer but the labouerers have no money with them for their expenses on this occasion.

When the manager (administration) of Sambu company, Sohail Abbas was contacted by Chitral Times to know his version, he said that there were some internal problems reagarding the arrangement of salaries for the labourers.

He said that the outstanding salaries will be paid to the labourers within a week time as the general manager of the project had a successful meeting with the WAPDA high-ups in Lahore on Thursday.
