Open letter to Prime Minister of Pakistan

Honourable Sir,

Greetings and peace from Pakistan Minorities Teachers’ Association (PMTA).

PMTA would like to draw your kind attention on the subject cited above.

Pakistan is a multi religious country and people of different religions are born citizens of this nation. Being the citizens of Pakistan they want to be treated equally according to the Article 25 (1) of the Constitution of Pakistan that guarantees, “All citizens are equal before law and are entitled to equal protection of law.”

Sir, the employees from the religious minorities serving under the federal and provincial governments are demanding their genuine fundamental constitutional right as guaranteed in the Articles 20 and Article 36 of the Constitution of Pakistan. The minority employees are unable to celebrate their religious festivals as there is not any notification of holiday/s. The matter has been raised in the parliament by the minority parliamentarians but no attention has been paid so far on this issue. The minority employees are waiting for the issuance of the notification of their religious festivals as their constitutional fundamental right. At present only the employees from the minorities have to apply for casual leave instead of holiday for the celebration of their religious festivals which is discrimination with them on the basis of religion and violation of the Constitution of Pakistan as well.

Article 20 Freedom to profess religion and to manage religious institutions.
Subject to law, public order and morality:-

(a) Every citizen shall have the right to profess , practice and propagate his religion; and

(b) Every religious denomination and every sect thereof shall have the right to establish, maintain and manage its religious institutions.

Article 36 Protection of minorities.

The State shall safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of minorities, including their due representation in the Federal and Provincial services.

It is therefore requested you to issue the notification of holidays so that Christians, Hindus, Sikhs, Parsees, Baha’is, Buddhists, Kalash and the employees of other religious minorities may celebrate their religious festivals with fervor without applying casual leave.

With best regards.

Prof. Anjum James Paul
