G.D Langlandsí Philanthropic Approach.

The article written by Arosa Shaukat, published in the Express Tribune has dealt with the educational contributions of G.D Langlands quite compressively in the backward areas of Razmak and Chitral, I would like to add a few points regarding the humanitarian approach of Major Langlands as I had an opportunity of working for six years as a teacher under his tutelage. During his tenure of educational administration, compassion was observed to be the hallmark of his personality. It was his concern for the needy that obliged him to deliver educational services for the most deserving people of the mountain-locked district of Khyber Pakhtunkha in spite of its harsh climatic conditions.

As excessive benevolence has its pluses and minuses in the worldly plane so was the case with him though the pluses were far greater than the minuses. In spite of coming from a martial background, he proved to be an empathetic Christian rather than being a Spartan administrator. He felt the pains of the less-fortunate and assisted them according to his means. He even spent his pension money on the staff when they sought for his help. His commiseration for the needy caused his organization overstaffing which was often criticized by the district administration to be a burden on the school budget but he adamantly opposed the idea of downsizing as he could not think of depriving the families of his employees of their subsistence. The district management had to vanquish the idea of downsizing in compliance with the orders of his students at the helms. Sometimes his mild nature also served as a shield for the few insensitive staff members as he deemed everyone to be the prisoner of his conscience. At times the school was called a black hole by having absorbed a huge amount of public money but raising billions of rupees for a school in the far-flung district of chitral was made possible only by the person of Major Langlands.

But the pluses of his kind character are numerous and immense. He established an institution of high caliber which was affordable even for the offsprings of the people from the lower middle class and as such it gave to the people thousands of highly educated professionals. Producing a batch of such professionals was a dream which was realized through the humanely mobilization of the old young English man of his teaching staff. His management approach was always democratic and consultative and he even respected the unreasonable and cynical views of his staff. It was his benevolence and respect for human dignity that made the teachers work joyfully under his principalship. His fatherly treatment of his students made him seek scholarships for the deserving students of chitral. As a result, many of them got admission in the much coveted Aichtson college and F.C college Lahore. Irrespective of being a westerner, he was consciensciously cognizant of the religious and cultural values of the area and always stressed his teachers to inculcate Islamic values among his students.

No mortal can resist the ravages of time on human talents and performances. Our countrymen get superannuated after sixty years but Major langlands efficiently performed up to ninety years. At the age of ninety five, he was replaced by a another British journalist, Miss Carrey Shofield who was welcomed by the natives thinking that she would improve upon the educational contributions of Major langlands but ironically she has proved a different character. At the outset she pressed upon curricular activities by introducing some positive measures but later focused only administrative and sports activities causing sense of insecurity among the teachers and parents. . Moreover, she has transformed the public school of G.D Langlands into an elite school by raising the fees hundred percent. Few rich may afford it but the doors of the institution will be shut to the potential talents of the less- fortunate majority because the philanthropic approach of G.D Langlands has been replaced by the elitist approach of Miss Carrey.

As they say sweet actions will blossom forth in the world of human beings till eternity .Similarly the benevolent deeds of major Langlands will ever be preserved in the memory of history. The people of Chitral really owe him a lot and pray for his longevity. We hope that Miss Carrey will emulate his philanthropic approach by revisiting her strategies because majority of the public will be the casualty of such elitist educational policies.
