Mastuj Broghal Road,
Its strategic importance and social implications
Recently the announcement of the Mastuj Broghal Road made by MNA
Chitral Shahzada Muhaidin is a good news for all the Chitralis
generally, and particularly for the people of Yarkhun and Broghal.
In this piece of paper I will discuss the strategic importance of
the region and the social implication of the Mastuj Broghal Road.
In present times the waves of terrorism are spreading in all parts
of our country. Now its signs are felt in such a peaceful area like
Chitral. The attacks of Afghan terrorists on Mirkhani cheek post
last year and the recent terrorist attack in Chitral clearly
indicates security apprehensions in Chitral. The strategic
importance of Chitral is due to its geographical location. It
touches directly with Afghanistan from its west for a long distance
from Arandu to Broghal. And contains many important passes. Borghal
is one of the passes, and it is the easiest and safe pass as
compared to others. In the old days the people of different
countries of Central Asia such as Eastern Turks, Kazakhs, Kirghizs
and Tajaks used to travel through this route for the purpose of
trade and pilgrimage. Through this route the Afghan army has
attacked in this region in many times. According to the oral
history, one of the famous battle was fought between Chitralis and
Afghan army in the historical place of Yarkhun Darband, which is 2
km away from Gazeen and Zhupu. In that battle the natives of the
region themselves defended their region and defeated the Afghans.
The existence of morchas (bankers) and Bangud (safety wall) in
Darband are still witness of that event.
Taking the strategic importance of the region and country’s
situation in mind, the government of Pakistan and Pak Armey took a
good initiative to build Mastuj Broghal Road, which was one of the
demand and the need of the peoples. Therefor, this announcement is
a glad tidings for Yarkhunitees, because this road will leave a
positive impact on our social life. Due to the rough road the
drivers are charging double fare for Yarkhun and triple for Broghal.
The prices of commodities are indirectly increasing, the serious
patients die before reaching hospital. The people are wasting their
precious time and wealth due to not having road facilities.
Therefore being a Chitrali and a native of Yarkhun, I highly
appreciate this effort of the Government of Pakistan. And looking
forward its practical implication.
