10 dies and 10 injured as avalanche hit Sher Shal village of Karimabad

PESHAWAR:
At least 10 people were killed and 10 injured while more than dozen homes were destroyed by avalanches and heavy rain which struck Chitral on Sunday.

An avalanche smashed into the village of Shershal Karimabad in Chitral district, killing nine people including four women and four children.

It hit eight homes at around 2:00 am, said a member Tehsil council Muhammad Ali shah. The dead bodies identified as Samina , Suhrab Ali Shah, Alian , Ayan, Shapeer Khan, Huzur, Zar Than, Ahmad and Bibi Hawa while the injured persons are Khosh Nizar, Shakila, Didar and Sameer were rescued under the debries.

Shahab Hameed,  Deputy Commissioner Chitral, confirmed the death toll, adding that most of the area´s roads had been blocked.

"We are trying to reopen the roads and help people," he said.

A separate avalanche killed a soldier at a border checkpoint in Chitral district, a military statement said, while six more soldiers were injured.

Chitral district Nazim Maghfriat Shah said the city´s airport was shut because of the weather. He said that due to heavy snowfall in the area over the past two days several families had been shifted to safer locations.

Another local official Muhammad Ilyas told the media that the people in the worst-hit area were facing medicine and food shortages because of road closures and flight cancellations.

The region´s electricity supply was also disrupted after the main transmission line was damaged and more than three feet snow fall recorded in the region.
