39690, children administered anti polio drop in Chitral District

By Zahiruddin

CHITRAL: During the four-day anti-polio campaign carried out in ten union councils of Chitral, 39690 children were provided with oral polio vaccine for which 206 teams had been constituted while no refusal case from the parents was reported from anywhere.

District health officer, Dr. Israrullah told the local media on Saturday that due to the recent snowfall in the district, the campaign was restricted to ten union councils as it was not possible to carry it out in the fourteen snow-bound union councils.

He said that to facilitate the parents of the children of age below 5 years, extensive arrangement had been made by constituting 179 mobile team, establishing 16 fixed centres, 5 roaming teams and 6 transit centres.

He said that to ensure that no child is left from vaccination due to one reason or the other, a follow up team was sent to each village on the final day of the campaign which combed down hundreds of children without being vaccinated.

“As many as 687 police personnel had been deployed to provide security to the staff deployed on vaccination duty while extensive security arrangement had been in Arandu and other areas bordering the Kunar province of Afghanistan”, he said.

“We had to be more vigilant on the areas in the Southern union councils including Arandu and Arandu whose villages bordered Kunar province of Afghanistan which posed a potential source of the virus due to their contiguity with the border areas while a number of polio cases had recently been reported from the Afghan areas”, he added.

He said that the response from the civil society for the success of the campaign has always been encouraging and positive and the department has always enlisted their support to ensure hundred percent coverage of the population and the outcome is that the district has been polio-free from the last three decades.

The DHO said that the campaign will be launched in all the remaining fourteen union councils of the district by the end of March as all the areas will be cleared of snow and avalanches.
