PM congratulates Ms Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy

Islamabad: Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has congratulated Ms Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy on winning the Oscar’s Award for the second time for her documentary “A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness”.

Lauding the efforts of Ms Sharmeen, the Prime Minister said that there is no place for killing in the name of honour in Islam. The Prime Minister further said that his government is in the process of legislating to stop such brutal and inhumane acts in the name of honour. Women like Ms Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy are not only a pride for the Pakistani nation but are also a significant source of contribution towards the march of civilisation world over.

Meanwhile the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs (SAPM), Syed Tariq Fatemi, congratulated the Pakistani film-maker, Ms. Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy for winning the Academy Award for her documentary “A Girl in the River - The Price of Forgiveness”. The award was announced a little while ago at a ceremony held at Los Angles, United States.

In his message, the Special Assistant stressed that it was a matter of pride for the nation that a daughter of Pakistan had yet again, achieved this distinction, which was a source of inspiration for all Pakistani women. He appreciated the invaluable contribution made by Ms. Chinoy for promoting the concept of rights of women in Pakistan through her art, by drawing attention to socially challenging issues.

He recalled the Prime Minister’s bold and forth-right remarks on the occasion of the screening of Ms. Chinoy’s movie at the Prime Minister’s Office on 22 February 2016, in which he had stressed that there was no honour in honour-killing, and had emphatically reiterated Government’s unequivocal resolve to ensure women’s rightful place in society, as well as to bring an end to violence against women.

The Special Assistant to the Prime Minister expressed the hope that Ms. Chinoy will continue to use her art for bringing meaningful change in the society.
