Unknown poachers hunts a Kashmir Markhor in Gahiret-Golen Conservancy

CHITRAL: Some unknown poachers hunted a kashmir markhor in the Thuna Thoni area of Gahiret-Golen conservancy last night and made good their escape leaving the carcass of the hunted animal on being chased by the men of wildlife department.

The sub-divisional wildlife officer, of wildlife department, Irshad Ahmed told Chitral Times  here on Wednesday that the hearing the shots of firing, the watchers of the department deployed in the vicinity on Tuesday evening informed him instantly on which he rushed to the spot.

He said that the local community members were also mobilized to the spot and the hunters were besieged in all directions but they succeeded in slipping from their grip taking advantage of darkness but deserted the carcass.

He said that the markhor was three-years old and had received a single bullet in its forehead while its flesh will be put on auction with the approval of the high ups.

He said that the local police has registered a case against the unknown poachers and investigation has been started.

Mr. Ahmed said that the strength of markhor in the conservancy has reached a zenith of 500 heads while two decades ago, the animal had been declared to be rare and endangered  species in the district.
