Meeting of District Development platform for PPR of SRSP held

CHITRAL: Tehsil nazim Chitral Maulana Muhammad Ilyas has said that the flash flood on unprecedented scale and the devastating earthquake of the last year has crippled the district government beyond measure as the funds for municipal services were diverted to the reinstatement and reconstruction of infrastructures.

Addressing on the occasion of District Development Platform of the Project for Poverty Reduction (PPR) of Sarhad Rural Support Program here the other day, he said that health and hygiene were the basic target areas of the local government and they were fully aware to it.

Appreciating the initiative of PPR in the two union councils of Drosh town, he said that raising awareness among the people about health and hygiene and providing them with necessary resources to carry on the related activities was its achievement having far-reaching results for the area which was contiguous to Afghanistan.

The tehsil nazim said that the resources of the local government were abysmally lower than the magnitude of the problems related to the provision of civic amenities while mobilization of the people will help reduce this gap.

Earlier, the district health officer of the Italian funded project, Javaid Ahmed highlighted the salient achievements of the project and said that apart from raising awareness and imparting training to the local community on health and hygiene and improvement of health infrastructure, the health-related issues were also highlighted for which round table meetings and development platforms were held.

The participants of the platform including village nazim Imranul Mulk and community leaders Waliur Rahman, Ishfaq Ahmed, Ashraf Ali and others pointed a number of serious issues related to health which included the absence of maternity home in the segregated and remote valley of Beori.

They said that a large number of mothers died while being removed to the Drosh town hospital for delivery and there was no any healthcare facility for the valley of more than 3000 people.

They also demanded provision of clinical waste disposal unit in tehsil headquarters hospital Drosh which posed threat to the whole area while the swelling number of the astray dogs in the town and unhygienic conditions in the town restaurants were also pointed out by them.
