By Zahiruddin

CHITRAL: Two micro hydro power houses were inaugurated by Sarhad Rural Support Program (SRSP) in Rech village in the extreme north of Chitral district here on Sunday which will electrify all the 432 households of the village.

Inauguration ceremonies were held in both the places one after the other in which chief executive officer of SRSP, Shahzada Masoodul Mulk formally inaugurated the power houses by lighting the bulbs after lowering the lever of the generators while thousands of people had gathered.

The program for Economic Advancement and Community Empowerment (PEACE) project of SRSP financed by European Union, had completed the hydro generation projects of 100 kilo watts each in the remotest village of the district at a cost of Rs.23.532 million.

Speaking on the occasion, the representatives of the local communities Ali Haider and Nadir Khan termed the power projects as the ‘precious gifts’ of SRSP to the people of Rech which were completed well before the advent of winter season which kept them hibernated for five months of the year due to heavy snow.

They said that the electricity will now bring about change in their lives and they will be familiarized with modern facilities of life with the help of electricity which had been a far dream for them as the government had no resources to construct micro power houses in village level.

They added that the residents of the distant village faced acute shortage of fuel wood for getting heat during the extended winter season but with the completion of the power houses, the issue will be solved once and for all as electricity will be used for cooking and heating as well.

They thanked the EU for its generous grant for the construction of the hydro power projects in their village which always remained marginalized by the government in the past.

Speaking on the occasion, Shahzada Masoodul Mulk said that SRSP had prioritized the micro hydro power projects in the length and breadth of the district keeping in view the exigency as the people suffered badly in the absence of power supply.

He said that the power houses were handed over to the local community after their completion for running them on the principle of social enterprise as a result of which the income accrued from it will be spent on the other development initiatives and interventions as deemed fit by themselves.

Mr. Mulk urged upon the communities to strengthen their organizations so that they could be able to run the projects efficiently and qualify for another development projects in other sectors of development for different donor agencies.

The district program manager of SRSP, Tariq Ahmed was also in attendance along with the senior management of PEACE project.
