CHITRAL: Two micro hydro power houses were inaugurated by
Sarhad Rural Support Program (SRSP) in Rech village in the extreme
north of Chitral district here on Sunday which will electrify all
the 432 households of the village.

The program for Economic Advancement and Community Empowerment
(PEACE) project of SRSP financed by European Union, had completed
the hydro generation projects of 100 kilo watts each in the
remotest village of the district at a cost of Rs.23.532 million.
Speaking on the occasion, the representatives of the local
communities Ali Haider and Nadir Khan termed the power projects as
the ‘precious gifts’ of SRSP to the people of Rech which were
completed well before the advent of winter season which kept them
hibernated for five months of the year due to heavy snow.
They said that the electricity will now bring about change in their
lives and they will be familiarized with modern facilities of life
with the help of electricity which had been a far dream for them as
the government had no resources to construct micro power houses in
They added that the residents of the distant village faced acute
shortage of fuel wood for getting heat during the extended winter
season but with the completion of the power houses, the issue will
be solved once and for all as electricity will be used for cooking
and heating as well.
They thanked the EU for its generous grant for the construction of
the hydro power projects in their village which always remained
marginalized by the government in the past.
Speaking on the occasion, Shahzada Masoodul Mulk said that SRSP had
prioritized the micro hydro power projects in the length and
breadth of the district keeping in view the exigency as the people
suffered badly in the absence of power supply.
He said that the power houses were handed over to the local
community after their completion for running them on the principle
of social enterprise as a result of which the income accrued from
it will be spent on the other development initiatives and
interventions as deemed fit by themselves.
Mr. Mulk urged upon the communities to strengthen their
organizations so that they could be able to run the projects
efficiently and qualify for another development projects in other
sectors of development for different donor agencies.
The district program manager of SRSP, Tariq Ahmed was also in
attendance along with the senior management of PEACE project.
