Review meeting of District Polio eradication held

By Zahiruddin

Expressing his anguish over the poor management for the polio campaign of last month in Chitral leading to low coverage, the deputy commissioner Osama Ahmed Warraich warned that any laxity in this connection will culminate in positive cases of polio.

Chairing the review meeting of district polio eradication committee (DPEC) here on Friday in his office, he scolded the officers of health department for its negligence towards the polio eradication program and pointed a series of flaws of fatal nature in it which hampered the anti-polio campaigns.

Terming the explanation offered by the district health officer, Dr. Israrullah for the failures as non-realistic, he said that there was almost no tendency of refusal case on the part of the parents and no risk of life as prevalent in the other districts and there wan no impediment for smooth execution.

“It was the sole responsibility of the health department to report to the district administration about the problems and hurdles of any type to make the anti-polio campaign a success but no issue was brought to his notice for solution giving a false impression of all right”, he said adding that now flimsy excuses are being offered by the officers.

On this occasion, the district coordinator of vaccination, Dr. Irshad Ahmed told the meeting that the next campaign will be launched in ten union councils of Mastuj tehsil targeting 21477 children of below five years of age for which 202 teams had been formed.

Dissenting the plan, Mr. Warraich ordered to include the fourteen union councils of lower Chitral in the forthcoming campaign sot that the left-over children could be administered polio drops thereby increasing the density of coverage.

Most of the members of the DPEC were either absent or being represented by lower grade staff of the departments while the district head of every department of the province is its member by virtue of his or her office.

The representative of Aga Khan Health Service, Pakistan from the meeting was also conspicuous by his absence which the largest partner of the government in health sector in private sector and has been assigned leading role in polio eradication.
