Seminar on Role of District Council in Social Development held

By Zahiruddin

CHITRAL: District nazim Chitral Maghfirat Shah has said that despite the presence of dozens of non-governmental organizations in the district since long, their net achievement is not discernible in any sector of development and they must be brought on the same page of the government organizations to make them deliver.

Addressing the Awaz Forum of South-Asia Pak Partnership (SAP-Pk) on ‘role of district council in social development’ for the members of zilla council he said that one of the main reasons for the failure of NGOs is the fact that the stake-holders are neglected while formulating strategy for their development.

He said that the prioritization should be the exclusive domain of the stake-holders and no effort will meet with success without realizing this truth and in view of this fact, the district government will make an elaborate strategy to string the organizations as per needs and aspirations of the people.

Mr. Shah, however, realized that some of the NGOs had done marvelous job in bringing about a change in the attitudes of particular areas making them receptive to development process and managing their meager resources for collective progress.

He said that women development will find a prominent place in the policy formulation of the district government and innovative steps will be taken for their financial and political empowerment remaining within the limits of the cultural and social norms of Chitral.

On this occasion, the members of zilla council stressed on being provided more resources for making attitudinal change in the people of their respective constituencies to make adaptive to the emerging scenario in the field of governance and development.

They were nearly unanimous in the demand that the NGOs should have more allocation for soft component activities to approach the broader cross-section of the society for changing their attitude towards development.

They also demanded establishment of Darul Aman for women in Chitral as many complex issued popped up in the recent past during the transition of run-away women.

The district naib nazim Maulana Abdul Shakoor, district coordinator Muhammad Isamil and district program officer of SAP-Pk also spoke on the occasion and highlighted the importance of local bodies members in the social development for their direct connection with the grass-root stratum of the society.
