Nauroze festival celebrates in upper Chitral

By Zahiruddin

CHITRAL: The Nauroze festival or locally called pathak dik was celebrated with low profiles due to the extended spate of rainfalls and the incident of Susoom Karimabad valley in which nine students lost their lives when snow avalanche hit them.

Anwar Baig from Garam Chashma valley, told Chitral Times  on telephone that all scheduled functions were cancelled for the day to mourn the tragic incident of the Karimabad valley.

The one-day festival is celebrated in the Lotkoh and Mastuj valleys of Chitral where it is celebrated on 21st March every year to accord welcome to the spring season.

A festival of Iranian origin, it is celebrated in the Ismaili dominated areas of the district including Karim Abad, Arkari, Garam Chashma and Mastuj where houses are renovated and decorated for the occasion while the people pass the time in merry-making and visit each other and make exchange of gifts.
